The soundtrack album was dedicated “…to The Man In the Planet’s Sister”. The Man In the Planet was played by Jack Fisk, brother of Lynch’s then-wife, Mary Fisk. Jack brought his future wife Sissy Spacek to the set to hold the slate during his scenes.

Filming, which began in 1972, took place at night in some abandoned stables, allowing the production team, which was largely Lynch and some of his friends, including Sissy Spacek, Jack Fisk, cinematographer Frederick Elmes and sound designer Alan Splet to set up a camera room, green room, editing room, sets as well as a food room and a bathroom.
